Cold Mix Asphalt vs Hot Mix: Why More Contractors Are Switching
The debate between cold mix and hot mix asphalt for repairs has been going on for decades — but in recent years, the balance has tipped decisively toward cold mix. Here’s why.
The Hot Mix Problem
Hot mix asphalt is the gold standard for new pavement construction, but for repairs it has three fundamental problems:
- Temperature dependency — Hot mix must be placed at 135–160°C. Once it cools, workability drops sharply. This limits effective working time to 30–45 minutes.
- Plant dependency — You need a hot mix plant within reasonable hauling distance. Small jobs become uneconomical when minimum order quantities are 10+ tons.
- Seasonal limitations — Most hot mix plants shut down in winter. That’s exactly when freeze-thaw potholes are at their worst.
Cold Mix Advantages
Modern polymer-modified cold mix asphalt addresses all three:

Performance Reality
The old perception that cold mix is a “temporary fix” comes from early-generation products that used low-quality cutbacks. Modern cold mix uses engineered binders that cure to performance levels approaching hot mix — and in some conditions (wet, cold, thin lifts), cold mix actually outperforms hot mix because it doesn’t cool and stiffen during compaction.
Bottom Line
For maintenance crews doing distributed repairs (utility cuts, potholes, edge breaks), cold mix is the clear winner. The ability to keep a pallet on the truck and do repairs on demand — without coordinating with a hot plant — more than justifies the slightly higher per-ton material cost.
