How to Choose the Right Crack Sealer for Your Climate

Not all crack sealers are created equal. Using the wrong product for your climate can mean failed seals, wasted labor, and unhappy clients. Here’s how to choose.
Step 1: Understand Your Climate
Hot Climates (Year-round >25°C)
- Risk: Sealant softening and tracking in summer heat
- Solution: High-softening-point hot-applied sealant (≥90°C softening point)
- Avoid: Low-softening-point products that become sticky on hot pavement
Cold Climates (Winter <-20°C)
- Risk: Sealant becoming brittle and losing adhesion
- Solution: Polymer-modified sealants with low-temperature flexibility specs
- Key spec: Look for bond strength retention after freeze-thaw cycling
Freeze-Thaw Zones (Wide temperature swings)
- Risk: Both summer softening AND winter cracking
- Solution: Premium polymer-modified formulations with proven field history
- Key spec: Flow resistance at 60°C AND low-temperature flexibility at -30°C
Step 2: Match Product to Crack Type

Step 3: Consider Traffic and Budget
- High-traffic commercial: Hot-applied, fuel-resistant, high flow resistance
- Residential driveways: Cold pour filler or sealing tape (DIY-friendly)
- Budget-constrained municipalities: Cold pour for initial treatment, hot-applied for high-priority roads
The Cost of Getting It Wrong
A $2/bag cold pour filler used on a 40 mm crack on a truck route will fail in weeks. A $25/box hot-applied sealant used on a residential driveway is overkill. The right product for the right application saves money on both material AND rework.
